This year’s Startup Weekend Manila – Fourth Edition promises to be a unique three-day no-talk, all-action weekend with the participation of ADP Pharma Corporation (ADP) and Pascual Pharma Corporation (PPC).

A special prize category is up for grabs for the team with a health-related idea and working prototype of an app that best collects data in real-time in aid of health-related services, research and development, and clinicals.

The idea should serve any one of these health issues:

women’s health and hygiene e.g. reproductive health

mental health e.g. depression, schizophrenia

tropical or parasitic diseases e.g. dengue, malaria, tuberculosis

cancer/oncology e.g. lung, breast

The team doesn’t need to find the cure for cancer: but tackling specific aspects of health services and R & D such as medical data collection, early detection and diagnosis, remote monitoring of clinical trials, compliance with treatments, or reporting and mapping disease incidence could be useful.

Joining the Startup Weekend Manila organisers are ADP/PPC Medical Director Dr. Ronald Subida and Pascual Laboratories Research & Development Director Dr. Isagani Padolina. They will select the winning team on Sunday, 28 April after the final pitch presentations.

The winning team will be awarded a cash prize of Php25,000 and, more importantly, have the opportunity to work closely with actual clients – ADP Pharma Corporation and Pascual Pharma Corporation – for real-life customer validation and usability. In addition, an office space at The Fort area will be provided for up to six months, giving the team direct access to medical professionals, research data, and facilities to further develop their prototype. Depending on progress, the team could potentially qualify for further startup funding of up to one million pesos to accelerate the build and launch of the idea.

The universal Startup Weekend judging criteria is broken up into three sections. Teams are judged according to the following 3 criteria (weighed equally):

Business Model

The heart of it all. If you haven’t got answers to these questions, you’ve spent too much time on frills & features and need to get back to the basics:

Who is your customer?

What is your core value proposition?

What are your key activities?

What are your revenue streams?

What is your cost structure?

Who/what are your key partners/resources?

What are your distribution channels?

What is your roll-out strategy?

Customer Validation

Have you taken the proper steps to ensure that the people who matter (your future customers) support and reinforce your assumptions? Think of Customer Validation as ‘evidence’ to back up the core structure of your ‘theory’ (your Business Model). The more feedback you gather (quantity), the more this feedback comes from your specific target market (quality), and the more you’re able to actually integrate this feedback into the Business Model and product development (execution), the better.

Execution

The nitty gritty: what has your team been able to actually build over the weekend? Even the strongest of Business Plans are useless in the hands of those who can’t properly execute on them. Getting as far as possible in the development of your product/prototype not only helps give Judges a tangible vision of what the final product could be, but proves your strength and skills as a team. This is what truly matters: investors don’t invest as in ideas so much as teams.

Good Luck!
